Hyderabad: 15-year-old delivers baby in school

Hyderabad: Police on Monday registered a rape case and launched a probe in to delivery of a baby by a 15-year-old class IX student of a government school at Madhapur on Saturday afternoon.

Both the young mother and the baby girl are said to be safe.

The student is the daughter of a visually-challenged widower, who runs a grocery store at Chandranayaktanda in Madhapur.She has two elder sisters, who are already married and a four-year-old younger sister.

On Saturday afternoon, the girl developed labour pains when she was in the class and went to the toilet. She delivered a baby girl in the toilet without anyone’s help and a fellow student noticed her and alerted teachers.

The women faculty took the girl student and the baby to a classroom, cleaned them up and alerted her family members. The girl’s family took both, the young mother and her new-born, to their house.

After a news report appeared in a vernacular daily, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) on Monday issued notices to the district educational officer and district medical and health officer of Ranga Reddy district to conduct a probe into the incident and submit a report by December 15.

During the preliminary probe, the girl told police that her neighbour Dhana was responsible for her pregnancy. The Madhapur police registered a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The offender went absconding.
