Jayalalithaa files case against ‘Nakkeeran’
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, on Thursday, moved criminal defamation charges against Tamil magazineNakkeeran for allegedly publishing an article that defamed her.
City Public Prosecutor M.L. Jegan moved the complaint before the Principal Sessions Court.
Mr. Jegan alleged that the May 20-23 issue of the Tamil weekly published a news article under the title ‘Containeril Pannam Pathukkal; Marraikapatta Unmaigal. Sikkiya Aavanangal” (Hoarding of cash in containers; Hidden truths, seized documents).
Alleging that the entire article was baseless, untrue and defamatory, Mr. Jegan said, “The news article has been published with an intention to tarnish the image and reputation of Ms. Jayalalithaa who has been re-elected as the Chief Minister with the massive support of the people.”
The prosecutor sought the court to initiate proceeding under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC against the magazine’s editor R.R. Gopal, special correspondent Dhamodharan Prakash and reporter Arun.
