Rape accused about to board flight to Dubai arrested
In a swift move, the district police arrested a rape accused just a few minutes before he was to board a flight to Dubai at Anna International Airport in Chennai with the support of airport immigration officials.
R. Moorthy (21) of Vazhimarichan under Kamudhi police limits was about to flee to Dubai recently after the All Women Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) charging him with rape of a 19-year-old girl, when the police arrested him.
The accused, who had worked in Dubai, came to the village on vacation and allegedly raped the girl after promising her that he would marry her. When he decided to ditch her, the girl lodged a complaint with the police, after which Moorthy tried to flee using his passport and visa.
He had cleared security and immigration checks and was walking down to board the Dubai-bound flight when the immigration officials stopped him on an alert from the district police. After faxing the copy of the FIR, Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan spoke to the immigration officials and secured the arrest, the police said.
The SP was in Kamudhi following the visit of Inspector General of Police (Armed Police) Ayush Mani Tiwari to Police Training College when the family members of the victim brought to his notice that the accused had left for Chennai in a bid to flee to Dubai.
Only a couple of hours were left for the flight to take off, but a police team, acting on the orders of the SP, swung into action and prevented the accused from fleeing, the police said.
After the immigration officials detained him at Chennai airport, the police secured his arrest. Later, he was produced before Kamudhi Judicial Magistrate Court, which remanded him in judicial custody.
