Mumbai doctor fixes Sonia Gandhi’s shoulder

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi underwent a surgery to fix her shoulder dislocation suffered during a Varanasi rally —at Sir Ganga Ram hospital on Wednesday evening. It was conducted by a team of doctors, including Dr Sanjay Desai, who recently operated on Shah Rukh Khan’s knee, and Dr Prateek Gupta of SGRH.

“She had a fracture dislocation of left proximal humerus or dislocation of the shoulder ball. We have fixed it and the surgery has gone well. She has recovered well after being in a lot of pain,” Desai told TOI. Desai, who is considered a pioneer in shoulder and knee surgeries in the country and has treated several celebrities, said Sonia is likely to be in the hospital for another couple of days. Sonia had suffered injury on her left shoulder after she collapsed during the Varanasi roadshow on Tuesday.

She was shifted to the ICU of SGRH from the Army (Research and Referral) Hospital on Wednesday. Dr D S Rana, chairman, board of management, SGRH, said in a sta tement: “Mrs Sonia Gandhi is making steady progress towards recovery from illness.All her health parameters are showing improvement and she is soon going to be shifted out of the ICU.”

Elaborating on the operation, a source said: “It was an open surgery .Doctors put a small cut in the front of the shoulder and slowly moved the head of the humerus, which is like a ball, back to its position and fixed it using screw and plate.”

The source added that the procedure took nearly two hours. Apart from shoulder injury , Sonia was dehydra ted and had electrolyte imbalance when she was brought to SGRH. “She was rushed to Army (R&R) hospital from Varanasi in a semi-conscious state,” a source said.
