Autorickhsaw strike in Mumbai
on Wednesday as autorickhsaws are expected to remain off the road. The Mumbai Autorickshawmen’s Union has given a strike call against the state government’s “failure” to regulate vehicles affiliated with cab aggregators.
Shashank Rao of the union said, “Around 1 lakh autorickshaws will not ply on Wednesday as the state government has been ignoring their demands, which is affecting their livelihood.”
He added that besides banning Uber and Ola till a policy for cab aggregators is framed, the state government should also bar private bus operators and transport cars from ferrying passengers.
Rao said, “The meeting called by the transport commissioner was a farce; he asked us to wait till the Centre comes up with a policy on cab aggregators. We also do not have much hope in the meeting convened by transport minister Diwakar Raote on September 1.”
Appealing to the union to call off the strike, transport commissioner Pravin Gedam said, “The transport ministry has formed draft guidelines for cab aggregator services and has set up a panel to formulate tariff pricing for such services. We will send our views to the Centre, hence the strike should be withdrawn.”
