BCCI considers felicitating Virender Sehwag at Feroz Shah Kotla
BCCI is considering felicitating Virender Sehwag, the recently-retired India opener, at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi after the fourth Test between India and South Africa, starting December 3.
The cricket board had recently honoured Zaheer Khan, another recent retiree, after the India-South Africa One Day International (ODI) at the Wankhede in Mumbai.
The BCCI are yet to make a formal request to the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), but the board president Sneh Bansal is gearing up for such an event.
“As of now we have not received any intimation letter from BCCI, but obviously if they have expressed their wish, it must be true. We will also discuss what needs to be done at our end at DDCA,” Sneh Bansal was quoted as saying by PTI on Wednesday (October 28).
Sehwag may have switched allegiances to Haryana at the start of the season, but the Najafgarh-born batsman has had long-standing association with the national capital and the DDCA is considering naming a gate at the Kotla after the swashbuckling opener.
“Yes, there has been talk (of naming a gate after him) and we have been discussing about it, but nothing concrete has come out yet,” Bansal added.
Sehwag brought down curtains on an immensely-successful international career – finishing with over 8,000 runs in both ODIs and Tests at eye-catching strike-rates of 104.33 and 82.23 respectively. He also called time on his IPL stint and will continue to ply his trade in the domestic circuit for his new team Haryana.
