Bengaluru receives heavy pre-monsoon rainfall

Bengaluru on Saturday night received torrential pre-monsoon rain coupled with high speed squall winds.

According to Indian Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru recorded a heavy rainfall of over 4 cm in less than an hour leading to heavy damages. IMD recorded 40.8 mm rains in city, 52.4 mm in GKVK, near Hebbal. The rain started at 8:40 p.m. and subsided by 9:30 p.m..

Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre sources said that rain varied in a range of 1 cm to 9 cm in various parts of the city. Western and southern parts of the city were the most hit.

The torrential rain was accompanied by a squall winds that recorded the highest speed of 50 kmph for a minute at 8:55 p.m.. S.M. Metri, director at IMD, Bengaluru said that the squall wind at 50 kmph was over 5 times the normal wind speed and was the main reason for multiple tree falls and other damages.

Mr. Metri said that Saturday’s rain were caused due to a heat system and trough formed over south of Andhra Pradesh coast and off Tamil Nadu coast.
