Rajapalayam police book case against lyricist Vairamuthu

The Rajapalayam South Police has registered a case under three different sections of IPC against lyricist Vairamuthu in Virudhunagar on Saturday.

Following a complaint from Hindu Munnani town secretary Suri, the police registered a case against the lyricist. The charge was that Mr. Vairamuthu had spoken ill of Goddess Andal at a function held in Rajapalayam on January 7 and that the Hindus were offended by the act.

The police said that they have registered cases under IPC Sections 153 A (promoting enmity, wanton vilification upon religion), 295 A (deliberate, malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings) and 505 (2) committing offence in any place of worship.

While the lyricist had apologised for the remarks after there were demands from the Hindu outfits, the issue took a political twist, when some of the BJP leaders criticised Mr. Vairamuthu for indulging in ‘cheap’ remarks. The DMK leader M.K. Stalin and even RK Nagar MLA TTV Dhinakaran too had joined the issue.

Two days ago, the Hindu Munnani volunteers staged demonstration in Srivilliputtur, the temple town of Goddess Andal and urged the police to arrest the lyricist.
