Rs. 3.40 crore in cash, 245 gold coins seized from school
Over 125 grams of gold coins and Rs.3.40 crore worth of cash were found stashed in a classroom of a private school here in Uthangarai on Monday.
On a tip-off that cash was stashed at Sri Vidya Mandir Matriculation Higher Secondary School here, a flying squad found the cash and 245 gold coins in a classroom.
Income tax sleuths were informed as per Election Commission norms.
According to official sources, the school management had claimed that the cash was received towards donations. However, I-T officials, unconvinced by the claims, seized the cash and gold coins.
In another incident, officials seized Rs. 1.4 crore from two persons, who were on board an omni bus from Kerala. The bus, which was on its way to Karaikal, was intercepted near Vedaranyam by election officials.
“Though there were a couple of raids in Chennai, no money was seized,” Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni said. Meanwhile, a senior official told PTI that the cash seized during the raids at the Egmore apartment was Rs. 4.93 crore, higher than the estimate of Rs. 4.72 crore.
