Tamil Nadu CM announces Rs. 310 crore package for Anna University

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced various projects worth Rs. 310 crore for Anna University to improve engineering education in the State.

Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, she said a cloud computing centre at a cost of Rs. 160 crore would come up at the university. It will offer various services to teachers, researchers and students of the university and affiliated colleges.

The government will also set up an automobile technology centre at the university to study ways to reduce emission of carbon dioxide as Tamil Nadu is at the forefront of automobile and spare parts manufacturing. The allocation for the project is Rs. 50 crore.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said as the university was regularly conducting international seminars to improve the skills and knowledge of students, a mega auditorium with a capacity to seat 5,000 people would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 50 crore.

The Chief Minister also announced a Rs. 50 crore centre for promoting international research and development and training. The centre would act as a facilitator for obtaining information on patent rights and for securing patents.

“The centre will provide information on inventions, incubation centres and research on industrial development,” she said.

The Chief Minister said a new arts and science college would be set up at Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district as students from the economically weaker section and tribal areas had to travel 40 to 50 km every day to colleges in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris. An allocation of Rs. 8.29 crore has been made for this.

Another college would come up at Perumpakkam in Kancheepuram district to benefit 4,269 students residing at the 20,376 Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board flats. An allocation of Rs. 8.48 crore has been made for this.
