Wipro promotes 10,000, gives 7% average hike in Q1
BENGALURU/NEW DELHI: Wipro, India’s third largest software exporter, has promoted 10,000 top-performing employees at the junior level and given 10-15% wage hikes to high performers compared to 7% for the rest of the workforce. However, one in every four Wipro employee was rewarded with the double-digit hike.
The Bengaluru-based firm hands out promotions twice a year, in June and December. It will promote another set of employees in December, human resource head Saurabh Govil said.
Wipro had in June announced average wage hike of 7%, in line with bigger rivals Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys’ announcements earlier this year. TCS handed out average salary hike of about 8% for employees in India while Infosys rolled out average wage increase of 6.5% in March.
According to HR experts, the IT sector is expected to get 8-10% average hikes this year, but a top performer with the right mix of technology and domain skills can expect more than double, going up to about 25% or even higher in some cases.
ET had reported earlier that niche skills and domain expertise will rule the roost in the $146-billion IT sector this year.
