Mohammad Kaif in running for Afghan coach job

Afghanistan may soon hire another Indian coach. Almost a month after it decided not to renew former India opener Lalchand Rajput’s contract, TOI has learnt that the Afghanistan Cricket Board(ACB) has approached Mohammad Kaif for the job.

Kaif, who played 13 Tests and 125 ODIs for India in the 2000s, was recently named as the captain-cum-mentor of Chhattisgarh, a team he led last season too, for the forthcoming Ranji season. Accord ing to sources, the 36-year-old batsman will meet top officials of the ACB, chairman Shukrullah Atif Mashal, and CEO Shafiiqullah Stanikzai later this week.

It remains to be seen if takes up the Afghanistan offer and announces his retirement. The veteran player, known for his heroic unbeaten 87 at Lord’s which won India the NatWest final against England in 2002 and his electric fielding, was the fielding coach of the Gujarat Lions in the IPL last year.
