Two militants killed in J&K encounters
At least two militants are killed in two ongoing operations in south Kashmir’s Shopian and north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
An encounter started in Shopian district’s Pehlipora area, around 52 km away from Srinagar, on late Monday evening when security forces laid a cordon. In the exchange of fire, one militant, identified as Farooq Sheikh, has been killed. “The operation is on. We suspect more militants hiding in the area,” said a police official.
In a separate operation, an unidentified militant was killed in Kupwara, around 90 km north of Srinagar. A gunfight erupted in Kupwara’s Chowkibal area on Tuesday morning. Two villages of Zonrishi and Marsari remains under the security forces’ surveillance following tip -ff about presence of militants.
Two militants were suspected to be hiding in the area. “The operation continues,” said a police officer.
On Monday, one local militant died and two were arrested when they were trying to cross the Line of Conrol into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from Pir Pancha’s Poonch district. The militant died after falling down into a gorge.
