Dilip Vengsarkar steps down as MCA Vice President

The spate of resignations amongst the top cricket administrators, post the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday (January 2) to sack Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke for failing to implement the Justice RM Lodha Committee reforms, continued on Wednesday.

Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar (Mumbai Cricket Association Vice-President), Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia (Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association chairman) and Sanjay Jagdale (MPCA president) joined KC Mathew (Kerala Cricket Association president) and former Test cricketer Brijesh Patel (Karnataka State Cricket Association secretary) in the list of administrators who’ve put in their papers in the past week.

Vengsarkar served four two-year terms as the MCA vice president from 2002 to 2010, before losing the presidential election to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in 2011.

After a four-year break, he came back in the MCA set-up, where he was also the chairman of the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) in 2015. The 116-Test veteran served as the chairman of the Talent Research and Development Wing, which unearthed several players including India’s current limited overs skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, from 2002-04.

Vengsarkar was also the chief national selector from 2006-08. In 2010, he was a part of the BCCI’s CIC. Currently, he’s the chairman of the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Jagdale was the MPCA secretary from 1998-2010. He was a national selector from 2000-2008, and the Board secretary from 2011 to 2013, before he quit in the wake of the IPL spot-fixing scandal. He was the MPCA president for the last two years. Jyotiraditya is the son of former BCCI president Madhavrao Scindia.
