A security guard who fatally shot a robbery suspect outside an under-construction building in the city early Friday acted in self-defence, according to the early stages of the investigation, police said.
A security guard, Mohan, called police to report that he had shot a man just after midnight outside an under-construction building near Bangalore Development Authority Complex in Nagarbhavi area. When officers arrived, they found a man dead of an apparent gunshot wound, a senior police official said.
According to the initial investigation, Bettaiah (50) was shot dead by security guard when he along with two other associates tried to steal electric cables from the (under-construction) building owned by JD(s) leader Javaraya Gowda, Police said.
Authorities were continuing to interrogate Mohan who was being cooperative with investigators working to piece together what happened, the official said, adding, “The security guard (Mohan) had warned intruders before firing on them.”
“I warned them (thieves) about having the double barrel gun. But they still attacked me, and I was forced to open fire,” Mohan told police during investigation.
