Sunil Lalvani quits Qualcomm

Qualcomm’s India president Sunil Lalvani has quit the company. Sources close to the development suggest that performance-related pressure was one of the main reasons for his exit.

Sunil Lalvani joined Qualcomm in July last year, replacing Avneesh Agrawal, who was with the company for 21 years. Qualcomm confirmed about the development to Gadgets Now.

The company said that Sunil Lalvani has decided to step down as VP & president of Qualcomm India, and a replacement will be announced soon. For the time being, Parag Kar, vice-president of government affairs will fulfil the position.

Lalvani reported to Jim Cathey, senior vice president and president, Asia Pacific & India, Qualcomm. He took charge of Qualcomm’s India business at a time when the company is facing huge challenges, both globally and in the local market.

Prior to joining Qualcomm, Cathey served as BlackBerry’s managing director of India and SAARC regions. While there, he led a strong engagement with Carrier partners and ISVs in India, thus driving the uptake of BlackBerry’s services portfolio in the India region.

Last month, Qualcomm announced that it has entered into a new 3G and 4G Chinese Patent License Agreement with Vivo Communication Technology. Under the terms of the agreement, Qualcomm has granted Vivo a royalty-bearing patent license to develop, manufacture and sell 3G WCDMA, CDMA2000 and 4G LTE (including ‘3-mode’ GSM, TD-SCDMA and LTE-TDD) complete devices for use in China.

The royalties payable by Vivo are consistent with the terms of the rectification plan submitted by Qualcomm to China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
