Violence erupts in Kashmir; eight protesters killed
Eight protesters were killed and more than 50 injured in the Valley after violence broke out in various districts, marking one the worst days of street violence in the State.
Earlier report said, two youths — one in Kulgam and the other in Anantnag — were killed in the violent clashes. At least five police stations and posts were set on fire in south Kashmir.
Reports from Pulwama district’s Tral, hometown of Wani, suggest that the militant commander will be buried after 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Amarnath Yatra was suspended as a precautionary measure.
A police official said a mob also attacked the BJP office in Nilo-Bugam area of Kulgam district and damaged the building. Violent protests were also held in Mir Bazaar and Damhaal Hanjipora in Kulgam district and Warpora in Sopore township of Baramulla district.
Stone pelting incidents were also reported from Sheeri, Kreeri, Delina, Pattan and Palhalan areas of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the official said.
Mobile internet across Kashmir was suspended while mobile telephony services were restricted in south Kashmir.
